Do you think there are expectations of being a black female?
“I think that our families expect us to be great. I feel like people outside of our family and race don’t expect much from us. And if they do, it’s negative.”
Have you ever worried about going to a place and being the only black female there? If yes, did you still go?
“Yes, it’s something that I think about but I would never let it keep me from an opportunity. It doesn’t have to be negative to me. It’s so interesting meeting people outside of your background and learning about someone else’s culture.”
Have you ever felt that you had to change a life goal to meet an expectation of family?
“No, my parents didn’t go to college. Some of my siblings and I have. And growing up my parents never put career expectations on us. They told us to be whatever we wanted to be and to finish school.”
